Hey Mr. Outland,
I was just thinking of Discovery and all my memories there today while I was hiking Mt. Rodgers! It was an awesome hike but still can’t compare to some of the awesome trips I went on at Discovery. I’ve been living in Blacksburg, VA for the past year and loving every minute of it. I am working on getting my associates degree in general studies by the end of the Spring semester… You know I can vaguely remember being at Discovery and hearing people who come back to visit saying how they really miss their days at Discovery and they would give anything to go back. And of course I thought: “well that really has to be a bit of deviation from the truth.” Well, I can honestly say that I do really miss the school and the environment there. Unfortunately you guys have not yet created a college credited “after program.”
I also have a wonderful girlfriend who I have been dating for about a year. I swear I think I have been through more group meetings with her about my selfishness, lack of concern for others, and attitude problems than I ever had in the woods at Discovery. And I would gladly sit in a group meeting with you before sitting down with her. You know I don’t think I would be at this point in my life right now if it were not for many simple things that I learned at the Discovery School. Unfortunately I am a forgetful person and every once in a while I need for a life situation to come and smack me hard over the head that for a brief moment I enough clarity to redirect myself.
If I would have any advice to anyone it would be to maintain “structure.” Also, if they are anything like me, then don’t trust your thinking and ask for advice and not from your old pothead friends for God’s sake!
I miss all of the staff there. A few shout outs of course to Mr. Dufort, Mr. Jacobson, Mr. Yates, Mr. Mellusi and Mr. Byrne. I am sure there are more.
