The Discovery School of Virginia supports students with substance abuse problems through on-campus SMART Recovery groups.
SMART Recovery is a well-respected model for substance abuse and addiction recovery recognized by The American Academy of Family Physicians, The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), The Center for Health Care Evaluation, The American Council on Alcoholism (ACA), The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). The approach pulls techniques from cognitive behavior therapy, rational emotive behavior therapy, and motivational enhancement therapy. Techniques in SMART Recovery are designed to help people manage addictive behaviors and achieve successful change. The SMART Recovery program is compatible with other forms of recovery, including 12-step programs, and SMART Recovery encourages individuals to determine a recovery path that is right for their needs.
