The Discovery School uses group therapy and the natural environment to promote a student's overall positive development

Program Description

Located on 318 acres in central Virginia, The Discovery School uses group therapy and the natural environment to promote a student's overall positive development. Each student is assigned to a group that includes ten students, two adult group leaders, and a supervisor. Each group lives in a rustic campsite village comprised of 8-10 cabin-sized tents, which the students design, maintain, and replace as needed.

The Discovery School of Virginia serves students who are experiencing emotional behavioral, and learning problems

The goal of the group is to help members gain the self-esteem, maturity, self-control, and problem-solving strategies they need to be successful in their family, school, and community. The positive group experience counters the effect of negative peer experiences. The peer group and the natural environment provide constant challenges for the individual, teaching insight into the cause-and-effect relationship between actions and their consequences.
