Philosophy and Guiding Principles
The philosophy of The Discovery School of Virginia asserts that teenage boys and girls with emotional, behavioral and learning problems can be affected positively by learning to hold themselves accountable for their actions and emotions through the use of the group process in the outdoor setting. Within this emotional growth approach it is believed that academic achievement naturally follows a student's emotional and personal growth. Staff also believe that a student’s successful return to the family must be based on mutual respect, good communication, and effective problem solving. Furthermore, staff believe that when confronted by both their peers and the adults in their group and treated with respect, students change and develop the sense of self worth and personal responsibility they need to become successful within their communities.
The Discovery School of Virginia is committed to the following principles:
•Academic success follows emotional and personal growth.
•Family reintegration is based on mutual respect, good communication, and effective problem solving.
•Young people with emotional and behavioral problems must be held accountable for their actions.
•The outdoor setting and the group process plays a vital role in helping young people see themselves honestly.
•Young people who are properly challenged emotionally, mentally, and physically will develop a positive sense of self-worth and a sense of responsibility.
