Academics
The Discovery School of Virginia for Boys and Girls are fully accredited secondary schools, offering middle school and high school credit classes, as well as special education, remedial, and GED preparatory classes. In the formal school, small class size and individualized instruction encourage students to progress rapidly through material in which they exhibit strength, and to spend extra time in areas where they show trouble attaining mastery.
The essential goal of the academic program is to teach each student to take full responsibility for their education. Our students learn to respect education as a privilege. A new student is initially enrolled in the experiential program to work on emotional/behavioral goals and to prepare for the formal academic program.
The experiential program stresses fundamental living and basic academic skills, for which students are eligible to receive credits. Students apply academic skills in practical, relevant ways as the group plans and carries out its activities. Students earn formal academic classes by demonstrating a willingness to deal with their problems in a mature and responsible manner.
