The Discovery School of Virginia and the Discovery School of Virginia for Girls serve young people who are experiencing emotional, behavioral, and learning problems. The 318 acre boys program and 150 acre girls program are located on separate campuses in central Virginia. The Discovery Schools use a group problem solving process and the natural environment to promote a student's overall positive development.

Referred students have frequently been described as being immature, impulsive, angry, and oppositional. Often our students have experienced failure in the traditional school setting. Due to their poor coping skills, students typically have a number of unresolved emotional and family issues; however, despite their difficulties, they are able to learn to form supportive relationships and grow within the group setting provided at the school.

The Discovery School of Virginia boys program is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Education, accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Education Facilities (VAISEF) and is a member of the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP). The Discovery School of Virginia for Girls is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Education and accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Education Facilities (VAISEF) .

Counseling at the Discovery School challenges you to apply your own life experience as part of a team committed to changing the lives of troubled youth. Few other entry-level positions can offer you such a unique opportunity for professional development and personal fulfillment.

As a counselor ("Group Leader"), you work cooperatively with other adults to plan growth and adventure experiences for youth in your care. You lead work and play activities, as well as structured meetings where students resolve differences. Most importantly, you foster a healthy, secure environment in which young men and women can turn their lives around.
